A big part of our diversity and inclusion strategy is to raise awareness and spark conversations internally and externally. So having recently won the Builders' Merchants Awards 2022 for Diversity and Inclusion in Merchanting for the second year in a row, we felt there was no better time to introduce ‘Make it Safe for Everyone’.
Ensuring our workplaces are safe for all colleagues includes physical and psychological safety. We care about our colleagues and we want them to be able to be their true selves at work. We believe that safety and success go hand in hand. When we make sure everyone is safe, they bring the best of themselves. We won’t stop until we make it safe, for everyone.
In the past year, through focused themes and celebrating events including Pride, International Women’s Day, International Men’s Day, Inclusion Week, Black History Month and Disability At Work, we have created conversations within the business, raised awareness, challenged stereotypes and driven real change.
Our approach is to keep talking with absolute honesty (even when it’s difficult), about issues that affect our colleagues, customers, and communities.
We are working on our gender balance. We’re proud to have two female role models on our executive board. Maxine Wiltshire-Frost, National Sales Director has held a number of senior roles in our business and now leads the national estimating and sales teams. And we have recently appointed Liz Forte as Marketing Director to lead our proposition development and business growth. These strong and confident women are not just leading their teams, but they are inspiring women throughout our business and the industry. They are helping to dispel the outdated notion that ‘merchanting is a man’s industry.’
Across our business, we are actively working on our gender re-balancing. In 2018, 18.54% of our workforce were females, now in 2022, this has increased to 21.5%. We know we have a long way to go but we are making progress.
Diversity and Inclusion are important parts of our business strategy and a key element in helping us to grow and achieve our objectives. To put it simply, we can not do the best for our customers without doing our best for our colleagues.
